As an experienced university administrator, Dr. Anthony Mayo possesses extensive expertise in leveraging technology to create structure and compliance controls that ensure streamlined operations, efficiency, and success of departments and institutions. Known for developing and consistently improving processes and systems, Dr. Mayo has transformed at-risk projects and relationships while leveraging technology to improve the visibility and ease of executive reporting, as well as equip institutions to achieve goals.
In 2006, Dr. Mayo launched his career at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey – Rutgers Health, Robert Wood Johnson, initially overseeing grants and contract operations for three University of Medicine and Dentistry campuses, then transitioning to the Director of Administration for Digital Media and Special Projects for the Health Science Libraries before joining the Dean’s Office of Research at New Jersey Medical School. In these roles, he oversaw internal funding and sponsored programs, presided over all financial matters and digital resources for the health sciences libraries, and later managed all facets of grant and contract administration at the New Jersey Medical School for the Office of Research. During his time in the Office of the Executive Vice-Dean, Dr. Mayo oversaw all financial aspects of internal payroll accounting transactions for resident hospital rotations, while also managing and coordinating external payroll reimbursement transactions from 23 hospitals across 20 diverse medical disciplines for the New Jersey Medical School Graduate Medical Education Program. Also, while in this role, Dr. Mayo was recognized by the Veterans Affairs as an “Innovator and Subject Matter Expert” for the development of a “Beta Project” that was used for the Veterans Affairs’ national billing templates for their work with other national Academic Institutions. While serving in this capacity, Dr. Mayo provided financial management oversight of the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine’s (DAYAM) preservation of vital grants that provide care to marginalized groups like uninsured young mothers and children vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. DAYAM is the only mobile medical program at Rutgers University, responding to the health and psychosocial needs of “high-risk” youth. Serving as the Director of Faculty Affairs for the Office of the Executive Vice-Dean, Dr. Mayo directed the recruitment and management of a diverse faculty portfolio of approximately 600 paid and 1600 volunteer faculty, providing guidance and mentorship to optimize performance and achieve departmental objectives. While in this role, Dr. Mayo was the chief architect of the development of the Faculty Affairs Toolbox System (FACTS), a faculty information system that tracks and manages the lifecycle of faculty employed within the New Jersey Medical System. The FACTS system and its modules are currently in use at New Jersey Medical School, Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, and Rutgers School of Nursing.
As the Executive Director of Sponsored Programs for the Office of Academic Affairs at William Paterson University, Dr. Mayo directed all aspects of the Office of Sponsored Program (OSP) operations, including revenue management, grant and contract negotiations, IRB/IACUC, and sponsor liaison. He accepted, executed, and negotiated new grant activities as the Authorized Organizational Official (AOO) while managing grant acquisition cash flow in collaboration with the Controller’s office. Among other achievements in this position, Dr. Mayo negotiated and acquired a comprehensive grant database management system that would seamlessly integrate pre- and post-award grant processes, as well as provide efficiency gains of 50–75% in proposal submissions by replacing manual workflows with a centralized portal.
Dr. Mayo earned his PhD in biomedical informatics from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, an MBA and MS in accounting and project management from DeVry University, Keller Graduate School of Management, and a BA in general arts and sciences from the Pennsylvania State University. He has also completed coursework toward a master’s degree in Applied Medical Informatics from Columbia University and toward an Industrial and Labor Relations certification from Cornell University. Additionally, he is associated with multiple organizations, including The Council for Opportunity in Education, Grant Professionals Association, and Health Research Incorporated.
